JUNO award nominee and seasoned veteran of the Canadian and USA festival circuit from coast to coast, Diego Marulanda is a well establish singer/songwriter, dance, theater, film and television scoring composer with vast experience in contemporary and world music. Born in Bogota, Colombia, Diego is a multiinstrumentalist performing as a vocalist, playing guitar, cuatro, tiple as well as numerous traditional Latin American instruments that make up his extensive collection.
Diego Marulanda has received many accolades for his highly original compositions that filled the first three albums he recorded with his 10-piece group Pacandé and his solo album “El Otro Lado”.
Diego Marulanda, Canada's premier Latin American composer, bandleader and vocalist, launched his fifth long awaited CD “Rueda La Bolita” (The ball is rolling) on November, 2011. Marulanda’s fifth album is the result of a diverse set of fruitful changes experienced in recent years. Integrating his passion with Latin American folklore rhythms with an ongoing fascination with contemporary rhythms such as reggae, hip hop, rap and electronica, this album blends these elements in creative and original ways.
His instrumental experimentation breaks away from conventional musical arrangements. Pacha Mama introduces a hip hop flavour pushed by the cuatro and pan flutes that drive the melodic rhythms in reggae-infused songs like El Rubusque and El Amor Es Lo Que Vale. Recreating instrumental partnerships, Cúspide represents a fusion of charango with electric guitars, the latter replacing the Tarka flutes that are typically used in the traditional rhythm and dance of the Andean region, Diablada.
The members of his band are among the top Latin Canadian musicians in Toronto and for this new project, Marulanda assembled some of the top musicians appearing on 'El Otro Lado' and “Ke’Ma, including Luis Orbegoso, Claudio Saldivia, Richard Morales, Adam Hutchison and Eduardo Gonzalez.
